Geology Building Lift Addition

Geology Building Lift Addition

Client: University of Otago
Location: Dunedin
Start Date: 2010
Completion Date: 2010

In November 2009, Lund South were awarded the contract to complete alterations to one of the University of Otago flagship historical buildings, on campus. The project was to construct a lift shaft and new study spaces within the existing bluestone building, we also had to co-ordinate the installation of the new lift within the same timeframe. The Geology building was constructed in the 1800's and is a category 1 Historic building.

The project had to be completed in a 14 week timeframe over the academic summer break. This was a feat only made possible by the methodology employed by Lund South. Lunds erected its own 32T Liebherr self-erecting electric remote controlled tower crane. This gained access right out over the building and a lifting point directly over the lift shaft, which was located in the centre of the existing building. The construction project also involved the addition of an internal corridor and plant room to the 3rd floor of the building, which required removing and re-roofing the upper level roof. To combat the unpredictable Dunedin summer weather, Lunds installed a temporary roof structure over the entire work area. This roof was designed to have a retractable section over the lift shaft to allow crane access. The temporary roof meant that the existing building was not damaged during wet weather and it also meant there was no time delay on an aggressive project.

Throughout the construction Lunds were proactive in addressing the sensitivities in working in a category 1 historic building. We arranged regular site visits by archaeologists to inspect excavations and informed the Historic Places Trust when items of interest were discovered. To keep with the look of the building Lunds ran all the finishing trim in their joinery workshop making moulded skirtings, architraves and cornices from recycled Rimu to match existing trims.

This project was completed to a high quality finish, on time for the start of the new academic year.
