Breakneck Road Bridge Renewal

Breakneck Road Bridge Renewal

Client: Waitaki District Council
Location: North Otago
Start Date: 2012
Completion Date: 2012

Lunds proved competitive against local contractors to successfully tender for the construction of the replacement bridge on Breakneck Road, over the Wainakaru River, for the Waitaki District Council.

The existing historical bridge had deteriorated and had been downgraded to the point that it was no longer safe for logging trucks or public use. The local residents were sad to see the historical Howe Truss bridge demolished which could have created unsightly public outcry for the Waitaki District Council. However, Lunds' management of this sensitive project kept the public happy and onboard. Resource consent requirements further challenged the project as very specifically no access was allowed from the river bed. To get around this Lunds developed and implemented a full methodology plan for both the demolition and construction of a new bridge. This included construction drawings by our in house Draughtsman, establishing our 40T Mobile P+H Crane, temporary single span steel beams, proprietary formwork kickers and sacrificial formwork to the bridge deck. Along with the methodology plan Lunds also implemented a project specific quality assurance plan to ensure all systems were signed off and completed in accordance with the stringent specifications and transit conditions.

The construction of the new bridge included bored concrete filled piles, concrete abutments and wing walls, Stelltech single span 610 UB beams and an in-situ concrete deck and guardrail. Lunds completed all concrete work, steel installation and guardrail directly.

The Waitaki District Council and Engineer, Dave Charters were extremely pleased with the performance of Lunds project team; Justin McEntyre, Rob Van der Geest and Kyle Osten, on this challenging project.
